We have been using FireStreamer with DPM 2012 for our production backup/DR for several months.
We started looking for alternatives to the traditional physical tape library/changer setup after we had issue after issue with the hardware itself.
It made much more sense for us purchase some external HDD's and start the trial of this software.
The management console isn't very intuitive initially, but FireStreamer support is great and easy to get a hold of.
The software allowed us to retire our aging and consistently faulty Dell PowerVault 124T; we now simply create virtual tapes on external HDD's, and Microsoft's Data Protection Manager doesn't know the difference.
We have even implemented the auto-loading (into DPM) of each new 'library'/HDD and with a simple script (called by a scheduled task), that FireStreamer supplied for us... basically you simply disconnect one HDD and attach another - DPM automatically updates the tapes available for backup jobs.
This automation is crucial and makes the day-to-day process of managing this process a snap.

We've had a couple minor issues with backup jobs failing, but I suspect these were issues with the server itself losing connection to the external HDD... not a FireStreamer issue.
(We installed a USB 3.0 card into our server to connect the HDD's)

We like this software and would recommend it for anyone who's looking for an alternative to the tape changer/tape media game.
The backups aren't as fast as we'd hoped, so if you're doing huge tape backups then time/timing might be an issue - I'd recommend a free trial of the software for sure.
